On 4 September, we celebrate World Sexual Health Day (WSHD). Sexual problems are, unfortunately, often still taboo topics. And yet sexual health is a critical part of our overall health and something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Today, we are discussing a prevalent problem that many men struggle with (premature ejaculation) and the most common sexual problem for women (Painful intercourse: five causes and solutions).

Between 25 and 60% of men suffer from premature ejaculation. For many men, this means that they climax sooner than they want or that they are unable to delay ejaculation. This can affect the length of sexual intercourse and potentially make sex less enjoyable. According to medical doctors, the typical description of premature ejaculation is that the man climaxes within 30 to 120 seconds after the moment of penetration. Some men are so sensitive they cannot be touched on the penis or climax even before their penis has entered a woman’s vagina. Obviously, this can have a devastating effect on a couple’s sex life and their relationship.

In the past, premature ejaculation was thought to be entirely psychological. Perhaps this is the reason why it is still a taboo subject, which unfortunately is true for many psychological disorders and problems. Although psychological factors such as feelings of shame, anxiety, insecurity or stress can definitely affect sexual performance, there is also growing evidence that factors such as diabetes, obesity, over-sensitivity or genetic characteristics can make some men more prone to experience premature ejaculation. Although there is not a single cure for premature ejaculation, a doctor can provide tailored advice and prescribe medication if desired.

Do you want to tackle the problem yourself first? Here are 10 tips that will help you last longer in bed.

  1. Distract yourself. You can delay your orgasm by thinking about something else when you’re on the brink of climaxing. Take a deep breath and focus on something that is not ‘sexy’.
  2. Take a break. Withdraw your penis as soon as you feel the urge to ejaculate. Take a few deep breaths and wait until your arousal subsides. Then go back to lovemaking.
  3. Squeeze the penis. Squeeze the penis in the area between the shaft and the glans for about 10 to 20 seconds just before you are about to ejaculate. Note: this technique shouldn’t hurt. Repeat this process as many times as necessary.
  4. Masturbate (more often). This will allow you to practise delaying your ejaculation.
  5. Take care of your partner. Longer foreplay can help increase satisfaction of your partner as well as delay your ejaculation.
  6. Discuss your fears or worries. When you talk about your performance anxiety it will encourage your partner to be more understanding and considerate of your feelings. Opening up can also help ease some of your worries or help you feel less insecure.
  7. Feeling stressed out? Make sure that you are relaxed before making love. There are many things you can do to relax, like exercising or reading a book.
  8. Learn how to control yourself by using breathing techniques. Breathe calmly and focus on the sound of your breath. Slow and deep breathing will help keep your heart rate low and allow you to focus your thoughts.
  9. Reduce sensitivity with creams. Apply to the glans 10 minutes prior to intercourse. Be sure to wash the cream off before having sex as it may cause you partner’s vagina to go numb.
  10. Relax! Letting your premature ejaculation problems blow out of proportion can cause major problems in your sex life and enjoyment of sex. As difficult as it may be, try to accept the situation as it is and enjoy being intimate with your partner.
