Dutasteride is a medication that contains the active ingredient dutasteride. It works by decreasing the size of the prostate gland in men with an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This helps to improve urinary flow and reduce symptoms such as frequent urination, especially at night. Dutasteride is suitable for men with BPH to help alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life.

Dosage and usage

You should take dutasteride exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The usual dose is one capsule (0.5 mg) taken orally once a day. It may take several months before you notice the full benefits of dutasteride. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions carefully. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to make up for a missed one. Each dutasteride capsule contains 0.5 mg of dutasteride as the active ingredient. The other ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gelatin capsules.

Common side effects of dutasteride may include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased ejaculate volume. Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include difficulty breathing, chest pain, and swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat.
