Lariam contains the active ingredient Mefloquine, which belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials. It works by killing the malaria parasites living in the red blood cells. This medication is suitable for adults and children over 45 kg to prevent and treat malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
For prevention, the usual dose is one tablet per week, starting 10 days before entering the malaria area and continuing during your stay and for 4 weeks after leaving the area. For treatment, you may need to take more tablets over a shorter period. Remember to take Lariam on the same day each week. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.
