Mounjaro is a medication designed to help lower blood sugar levels and support weight loss. It is primarily used in adults with type 2 diabetes but can also assist individuals who are overweight and find it difficult to lose weight despite following a healthy lifestyle. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a compound that mimics the action of natural hormones in the body. These hormones aid in lowering blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and reducing appetite. Consequently, Mounjaro can help stabilise blood sugar levels and may contribute to weight reduction. The medication is most effective when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Results vary between individuals; some may notice improvements quickly, while for others, it may take longer. Mounjaro is available by prescription only and is administered via a subcutaneous injection.

Each pen delivers four doses. The medication is available in different dose strengths. Each dose strength comes in a pack containing one prefilled pen with disposable needles (1 pen = 4 doses).

Dosage and usage

Mounjaro is administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection, typically in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. It can be taken at any time of the day, with or without food. Aim to administer the injection on the same day each week. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the correct dosage. If you are unsure how to inject, consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible if fewer than 4 days have passed. If more than 4 days have elapsed, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

What does Mounjaro contain?

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide. Depending on your doctor's instructions, each injection contains between 2.5 mg and 15 mg of tirzepatide. The excipients include sodium phosphate, sodium chloride, and water for injections.

Side effects

As with any medication, Mounjaro may cause side effects. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting, and constipation. These symptoms often subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Occasionally, you may experience abdominal pain, indigestion, or flatulence. In rare cases, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or a severe allergic reaction may occur. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

Precautions

Mounjaro is suitable for most individuals with overweight and/or type 2 diabetes. However, it is not appropriate if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of the excipients, if you have type 1 diabetes, or if you have diabetic ketoacidosis. Consult your doctor if you have severe stomach or intestinal issues or a history of pancreatitis. Extra caution is advised if you have erectile dysfunction in combination with diabetes, as fluctuations in blood sugar levels can have an impact. Do not use Mounjaro if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Discontinue its use at least 2 months before attempting to conceive. Exercise caution when using insulin or sulfonylureas (such as gliclazide), as these increase the risk of low blood sugar.
