Doxycycline (Malaria)

For malaria prevention, the typical adult dose of doxycycline is 100 mg once a day. You should start taking this medication 1 to 2 days before traveling to the malaria area, continue during your stay, and for 4 weeks after leaving the area. Remember to take it with a full glass of water and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Each doxycycline tablet contains 100 mg of doxycycline hyclate as the active ingredient. The tablet also includes excipients such as magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and croscarmellose sodium.

Common side effects of doxycycline may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or skin sensitivity to sunlight. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, and signs of a new infection such as fever.

Before taking doxycycline, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid taking doxycycline with dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any tetracycline antibiotics. If you experience severe watery or bloody diarrhoea, contact your doctor immediately as this may be a sign of a new infection. Remember to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing.
