Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition characterized by a red facial rash, often affecting the cheeks, forehead, and nose. It can also cause bumps, pustules, and visible small blood vessels near the surface of the skin. In some cases, additional symptoms like a burning or painful sensation may develop. Over 50% of those with rosacea experience eye-related issues, such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) or keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). In severe cases, especially among men, the nose may become enlarged and bulbous, a condition known as rhinophyma. Although rosacea is not physically disabling, its visible symptoms can significantly impact self-esteem and may lead to feelings of self-consciousness or depression.

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is thought to be associated with various environmental factors. Sun exposure, temperature fluctuations, alcohol, spicy foods, and certain medications can exacerbate symptoms. Other common triggers include stress, cosmetic products, and hormonal changes. Rosacea generally occurs in adults over 30 and is more common in women than men.

How to treat rosacea

While there is no cure for rosacea, medical treatments can help control or reduce its symptoms. Mild cases are typically managed with topical anti-inflammatory creams, gels, or lotions. More severe cases may require oral antibiotics, which are often used for extended periods. Alongside medical treatments, it is important to identify and avoid triggers that can worsen the condition, such as specific foods or skincare products. Using sunscreen to protect the skin from UV rays is also recommended.
